William Henry Gates III, more commonly known as Bill Gates, was born on October 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington. His father, William H. Gates Sr., was a prominent lawyer, and his mother, Mary Maxwell Gates, was a businesswoman who served on charitable boards. From a young age, his parents encouraged him to pursue a career in law, but Bill’s interests were always centered around computers and programming.
During his school years at Lakeside School, Bill’s fascination with computers took shape. The school’s decision to provide students access to computers was a pivotal moment in Bill’s life. At just 13 years old, he created a simple computer game called “Tick Tock,” igniting a lifelong passion for software development. This early experience marked the beginning of his journey into the tech world, where he met his future business partner, Paul Allen. Although the two had differing personalities—Paul being more reserved and Bill more animated—they formed a strong bond over their shared interest in computers.
Their collaboration led to several early successes, including a program they created to monitor city traffic, earning them $20,000 while they were still in school. In 1975, he dropped out of Harvard to fully dedicate himself to a company he co-founded with Paul Allen, which would become known as Microsoft.
